Some 50 plus years ago, a young girl entered a Franciscan Convent in New York City to be known as Sister Noelia Marie.  That was one lifetime.

Ten years later she transitioned to civilian life and a path which would lead her to becoming the Community Mayor of Harlem, Ambassador of Goodwill to Africa, founder of the New Future Foundation and along the way to be known as Queen Mother Dr. Delois Blakely.

There’s another lifetime starting, thanks to the emergence of Occupy Wall Street and the resurgence of the international concerns around the environment which will be revisited – in force – in Brazil when it hosts the Rio+20 events on June 20-22.  Both entities are welcoming her energy with open arms.

How did Queen Mother Dr. Delois Blakely catch the attentions of two, seemingly disparate movements?  Or, the better question – how did these two movements catch her attention, and why?

If the Boys in Blue want to keep that positive color instead of being seen as “Bullies in Black,” they are go to have to do some real soul searching when it comes to their actions in managing protestors in the Occupy Wall Street Movement.

The good news?  For those who fancy themselves to be the ones in the white hats: they chanced upon an excellent model after which to pattern themselves, retired Philadelphia police Captain Ray Lewis. 

The bad news?  On November 17 they chose to arrest Ray Lewis instead when he stood with others at a Wall Street demonstration – on his 60^th Birthday, no less.

The bad news worsened when both national and international press filmed Captain Lewis seated on a NYC sidewalk in dress blues (and un-matching handcuffs) and wrote strong copy in support of him.  This coverage, naturally, created a corresponding ripple of anger through the police community.

Turncoat!  Traitor!  Not to mention the fingers pounded into his chest along with low-voiced threats.  Yes, threats.  But, they had no effect on Ray’s determination.

“The role of police in managing protest movements is coming to an important juncture,” Ray declares.  “At what point do they stop being civil servants and start being illegitimate oppressors of free speech and rightful assembly?”

Is he a renegade, or does he embody the characteristics of the “true American” that people think about when we picture “common” people in history who have stood up against powerful forces?

My guest is Doug Price, who became president and chief executive officer of Rocky Mountain PBS in January 2009 and elected to the board of directors of the Public Television Major Markets Group.

Prior to that, he had a successful career in banking with FirstBank Holding Company of Colorado. A 1978 graduate of the University of Colorado, he became president of the FirstBank of Boulder in 1982. He was promoted to president of FirstBank of Denver in 1988 and retired in 1999.

He was elected as the Chair of the Board of Trustees for Colorado Mesa University in April of 2011. Appointed by former Governor Bill Ritter, he has provided leadership on many initiatives, including the addition of the institution’s first Ph.D. program in the field of nursing.
